How to use Average Face PRO
Average Face | comments(0)

平均顔, average face

In the example shown above, faces of 342 girls were averaged by using Average Face PRO. Synthesizing this image was not an easy work because this app is not a casual automatic image synthesizer but just an image-synthesizing tool. In order to generate average face images like this one, you need to fully understand the nature of this app.

Note: After version 4.5.1, most procedures can be accomplished automatically (-:

Find an image and import it to the app

Find a face image using a web browser such as Safari or Chrome.  Ideal images for the synthesis are

  1. High quality images.
  2. Front view face images (Mona Lisa is NOT a very ideal image).
  3. Images of faces whose features are clearly visible.

Using a copied image

If copying the image on a web browser is possible, copy it and then tap 'Open Face Image' button of the average face app.

The app should show 'Paste' option. Tap 'Paste'.

If copying an image is not possible

Copying an image on a web browser often fails for many reasons.  In such cases, save an image to your device's photo library. Back to the average face app and tap 'Open Face Image' button as described above. Then, tap 'Choose from Library' option. You can use an image stored in your photo library for the synthesis.

Cropping the image

After importing an image, a Cropping View is shown. The average face app tries to show a face at the center of the Cropping View, but you can adjust the position and/or the size of the face manually.

Tap 'Done' button to continue.

Note: Mirroring the image is possible if necessary.

Recognized Accurately?

The average face app tries to recognize the faceial  features.

If the recognition is successful and accurate, markers are shown along the facial contour, eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth as shown to the left side in the image below.

The coarse placement of fewer markers as shown to the right side suggests that the app failed to recognize the facial features accurately.

Register the face

You should check the accuracy of the placement of the markers. If you find a marker that is out of an ideal place, adjust its position by dragging it.

If you find no problem, tap 'Register this face' button (or 'Average' button).

Add more faces and average them

Import another face and adjust marker positions if necessary. Register the 2nd face by tapping 'Average' button. You will see an average of the first and the 2nd faces.

Add the 3rd and later faces via the same procedure. Psychological studies have shown that averaging many faces can generate highly attractive facial appearance. Is that true?

If the accurate feature recognition is failed

In most cases, the average face app can regonize facial features accurately, and you do NOT need to read the latter part of this article.

If, however, the accurate feature recognition is not possible, you have to place the markers manually as described below.

Draft Mode

'Draft' mode is a good start point for the manual marker placement. Draft mode is automatically chosen if the facial feature recognition is failed.

Place the markers on the face as shown above. You may place them roughly except for four points; two markers on the eyes and two markers on the temples. These four points should be placed very carefully.

Importantly, DO NOT place the markers for the eyes at the pupils.

I repeat; DO NOT place the markers for the eyes at the pupils.

They should be placed at the TOP EDGES of the eye openings (or just above the irises).

Details Mode

Tap the 'Details' button to show more markers along the face contour and around the eyes as shown below.

Adjust markers along the face contour. For most cases, slightly adjusting markers around the jaw and the cheeks is sufficient to generate beautiful faces.

Markers around the Eyes

DO NOT place markers for the eyes as shown above, although they look very natural.

Place the markers in a weird way as shown below.

There are four markers around each eye; they are to be placed at

  1. the inner corner of the eye,
  2. the tail of the eye,
  3. the innter end of the brow, and
  4. the outer end of the brow.

If the brow is not visible due to the bang, imagin it.

Finish mode

Tap the 'Finish' button to show two additional markers for each eye.

For each eye, one additional marker is to be placed at the peak of the brow.

Another marker is to be placed at the bottom edge of the eye opening (or just below the iris).

At last, you can tap 'Register this face' button (or 'Average' button) to finish the procedure for this face.
